Tra i lembi is a series of small-scale works that originates from the observation and reworking of marks produced through welding, one of the central techniques in Matisse Mesnil’s practice. Each element functions as an autonomous fragment, constructed through subtle variations in mark, surface, and material, balancing repetition and uniqueness.
By focusing on the elements that create a distance between the viewer and the work itself, Matisse Mesnil has developed a practice rooted in technical and methodological experimentation around his material of choice: metal. Positioned between craftsmanship and industry, this material calls for a reconsideration of both gesture and tools. Working rhythms become subordinate to its physical processes, while the technical apparatus itself becomes fully integrated into the formal construction of the work.
Through processes such as welding and grinding, Mesnil reconsiders the possibilities of figuration within some of its most traditional genres, including landscape and still life. This research is accompanied by an increasingly essential visual vocabulary, composed of linear modules and minimal variations, which approaches the language of Minimalism without fully adhering to it. Alongside the noise and physicality of the industrial world emerges an aesthetic and ethic of quiet contemplation.
A subtle tension runs through the artist’s most recent works, which often evoke an almost sacred dimension. This is also reflected in the scenographic and architectural attention that structures his practice: from their format to their modes of display, the works are conceived to be experienced spatially and in direct relation to the viewer’s body.
More recently, Mesnil has expanded his research to a larger scale, developing site-specific land art interventions during artistic residencies. In these projects, the work engages directly with the landscape and with the material conditions of a given place.
Matisse Mesnil lives and works between France and Italy, with studios at POUSH and Gate 44. Alongside his solo exhibitions, he regularly participates in group shows in galleries and institutions in France and internationally, including the Centre Pompidou-Metz, Collection Lambert in Avignon, Zhi Art Museum in Chengdu, Mucem in Marseille, and the Musée Jean-Honoré Fragonard in Grasse.
His work has also been presented at major art fairs, including Artissima, miart, and Art Brussels.
