Erin OâKeefeâs work often features photographs of simple geometric forms in vivid colours. These painted objects are carefully arranged and illuminated, with light and shadow playing an important role in how they are perceived. The paint itself is applied quite freely, leaving visible brushstrokes and traces of the artistâs hand.
At first, the compositions can be slightly confusing, as it is not always clear how large the objects are or whether they are actually flat or three-dimensional. OâKeefe uses colour, light and shadow to create a kind of visual game, making the viewer question what they are seeing.
Â
The photographs show arrangements of painted wooden shapes that are constructed in a way that makes them appear almost impossible in space. By using the cameraâs single viewpoint, OâKeefe creates an illusion in which different elements seem to occupy the same space, making the distinction between depth and flatness difficult to understand.
Erin OâKeefe (1962, Bronxville, US) is a photographer based in New York City and New Brunswick, Canada. The artistâs work is informed by both photography and architecture. The questions asked through the work are about the nature of spatial perception, and the tools used are rooted in the abstract, formal language of making developed as an architect. The artistâs latest solo show was held at Seventeen in London in 2025; her works were also included in exhibitions at MusĂ©e des Beaux-Arts Le Locle (2026), Torino Foto Festival (2024), Palais Populaire Berlin (2021), Kasmin Gallery New York (2020) and The Photographersâ Gallery London (2016).
