Walter Niedermayr (1952, Bolzano, Italy) has been working on projects that examine space as a reality occupied and shaped by human beings since 1985. Spatial perception and the atmosphere of placesâboth open and enclosedâare recurring themes in his photographic and video works. The Alpine regions, urban structures, architecture, and industrial sites form the context of his investigations. Total institutions such as prisons and hospitals, with their daily rules and standardized routines, are the focus of his observation. This is evident in his series: Alpine Landscapes (since 1987), Spatial Sequences (since 1991), Raw Constructions (since 1997), Artefacts (since 1992), and Image Space (since 2001). Between 2005 and 2008, he created the IRAN series, followed by the Aspen Series (begun in 2009 and completed in 2016). In 2011, he launched the Coexistences project (completed in 2017), while the Spatial Appropriations project was conceived in 2015â2016. In 2012, he undertook additional series on the Alpine landscapeâthe Portraitsâwhile simultaneously developing a new interest in objects and structures that, having lost their function, become relics. These series should be understood as ongoing projects, constantly evolving and expanding over time.
