This series of mosaic works by Josh Rowell looks at emerging cultures and behaviours within the internet space, whilst also commenting on the importance of archiving events within the internet's history. For each of these pieces, Rowell takes inspiration from trending comments found across various social media platforms; comments that range from the comical to the weird, and at times the alarming.
What particularly struck Rowell about these comment memes was the fact that they seem to remain popular only for a short period of time, perhaps a couple of months at best, before being replaced by the next popular comment to copy and paste. For the artist, this is indicative of the way in which social media in particular is used: constantly updating, refreshing and posting, building layer upon layer of information. By digging back down through the history of our feeds, Rowell seeks to capture these strange, fleeting moments.
The decision to recreate them as mosaics plays on the idea of the works becoming almost archaeological objects. Rowell identifies real similarities between searching through the forgotten detritus of social media feeds and digging into the earth to uncover some ancient artefact.
For Rowell, we are living through an age of rapidly expanding technological capability, which is understandably having an impact on human behaviour. His concern is that these developments are so present and pervasive that there is little opportunity to stop and consider the resulting changes in the way we behave. Through these works, Rowell seeks to create precisely this distance: an opportunity to step back, consider what is happening within the internet space, and reflect on how it is affecting us.
