In his latest series of walking-based paintings, Josh Rowell builds upon an earlier exploration, delving into the temporal division he has experienced in the 21st century between the real and digital worlds. As he embarked on various walks through the picturesque countryside surrounding his home, Rowell carefully gathered datasets in order to map and illustrate the growing intrusion of the digital realm into everyday life. The resulting works begin with a photograph taken during each walk, which he then meticulously divides into specific rectangular segments, each one symbolizing one minute of the journey.
Some of these segments are blocked out in vivid fluorescent paint, signifying the minutes in which Rowell was absorbed in the digital world — whether writing a message, capturing a photo, taking a phone call, and so on. These works vividly convey what he refers to as “digital distraction,” a phenomenon that affects all of us in today’s technologically advanced society. The more time Rowell invests in his phone, the more obscured the once-pristine natural world becomes, evoking the sense that the real world is gradually disappearing and prompting questions about how we choose to invest and use our time.
